Large diameter tubing is shaped using flame and breath on the glass-lathe
- a forgotten industrial facility reinstated at the National
Glass Centre especially for this project. Gas filled glass
is secured using nuts and bolts cast in resin through a new technique
known as rapid prototyping. The artist states:
‘My inspiration came from 20th century, electricity generating,
bold, honest forms. Electric insulator ribs and trumpets search
outwards to connect, like flowers desperate for pollination. The
narrative suggests purpose beyond that of a chandelier.’
Wheater’s unique light filled chandeliers combine old glass
making techniques with recent technologies, producing extravagant
yet functional, 100% recyclable and energy efficient installations
of near limitless scale, shape and colour.
